ABOUT

Jordan has a functional educational system, with an infrastructure that is characterized by quantitative and qualitative bottlenecks. The high number of refugees as a consequence of the Syria crisis poses an additional strain on the educational system.

The School Construction Programme (SCP) aims to improve learning conditions in the field of basic education in the target areas depending on the site selection process through the provision and adequate utilization of additional school infrastructure and the corresponding equipment.

A total of 18 schools are to be constructed through the School Construction Programme (SCP), 7 of which are funded by the European Union (EU) while 11 are funded by the German Government through the KfW Development Bank.

For these 18 schools, the EU has provided funding of 36.6 million Euros (30.6 million Euros as initial funding and a top-up of 6 million Euros) while the German Government has ensured funding of 29 million Euros (in two separate agreements, 19 million Euros and 10 million Euros).

Overall, these schools have been designed to be cost-effective for construction, operation and maintenance and fully functional to allow complete circulation, accessibility and inclusiveness and effective interactions. The overall design methodology has considered the general approach and design process used for developing a school in the 21st Century, while in particular taking into account the specific approach to site analysis and site layout for each of the individual school sites.

As a continuation of the European and German engagement in the field of school construction and of the focus of German-Jordanian cooperation on the education sector, School Construction Programme III/IV will be implemented with the German Government’s commitment amounting to up to EUR 34 million. Further support to the Government of Jordan is extended through the implementation of the Programme “Support to the Jordanian Education Sector – School Construction (“SCP-Loan” - EUR 100 million) which aims to create up to 18,000 additional school places by building and rehabilitating schools.
